I am very sad I have lists for everything & I have been comparing the amount of figures in my stash to figures that have actually been painted in total. my stash is just over 12,000 figures at the moment & completely finished just under 3,000 making about a ratio I believe of around 4 unpainted to 1 painted is this usual how do other peoples stashes compare.

Don't worry for me it's 3 to 1 and as long I am getting new figures it will remain the same. May be if I retire I'll have more time, but who knows?

I'd rather not know so I don't count.
But in non specific terms: How many figures do I have? Not enough. How many non painted figures do I have? Too many!... but still not enough.
Yes, I did just buy 5 more boxes. I should paint 5 figures to compensate.

I have a feeling I have one of the lowest Painted figures ratio's I dread to think what it actually is, not helped that I have sold, swapped and given away some of my earlier painted efforts with the thinking I can do a better paint job now, the only thing is I never seem to have time to get back to painting, so I just keep buying more figures and cramming them into my wardrobe and look forward to when I can get the brushes out again.

I have such a poor ratio of painted to unpainted. If I'm optimistic, maybe 1 set painted for every 20 sets owned. I never have time do the painting, but buying new sets online only takes a minute...

About 5000 painted and 2500 waiting for the brush. I've got several boxes of Esci French Grenadiers which I will never paint as I bought them before the Zvezda Grenadiers were issued.

I have a stack at least 2 year-worth (probably 3) of painting on my shelves. I paint a little over 1000 napoleonics a year, I've been painting them for 4 years now, and I calculate I'm gonna need at least another 5 to finish up everything I want to have (which is pretty much every single nation that fought in the napoleonic wars...).

This way madness lies!
They'll all be painted eventually.
Really, they will!

Over 15 000 painted and less than 150 unpainted.
I really hate having piles of unpainted figures on hand.

Great question. For my 1815 Napoleonic collection: about 4800 painted about 4800 unpainted about 3600 not yet acquired, but planned
not yet acquired and not planned - unknown...

My problem is I never seem to have ANY figures finished to my complete satisfaction. Over the years as the hobby has progressed we see new fashions in basing, new styles of shading and washing, then there's static grass and tufts, and new ways to do flags. I'm struggling to catch up...
So, until I got drawn back into Napoleonic gaming after a 20-year break by discovering Sharp Practice, I'd say my overall army ratio was 3 figs painted to 1 unpainted, perhaps better among the cavalry arm, where I have 4 figs painted to every 1 unpainted. Unfortunately, about half of those painted figures still need rebasing and some reworking.
Artillery is my current disaster zone, with the poor quality of the Airfix French arty box mainly to blame. I'm having to replace all my French guns and limbers, and redo all the British limber teams. So with my artillery I'd say I'm overall at 1 fig painted to 1 unpainted, but even the 'painted' stuff needs major reworking.
My plan is to get stuff finished and based to a mediocre 'wargaming standard', and then to add the fine shading at a later date.... if I ever have enough time.

I've something like thirty thousand or so pieces painted over the last 30 or so years since I started painting, but have literally cases of figures bought over the years and placed back for "as soon as I get this project done..." but there seems to always be something that gets in the way so...
And a few years back I started in on my 1/32 scale collection (another fifteen thousand or so figures accumulated since 1961 at last count) that puts me even farther behind the power curve. The thing is, I had intended to back out of painting and collecting 1/72 what with age, retirement, and my aging eyes but then all these great new Nappy sets started being released after years (it seems) of zilch and... like Michael Corleone, "Just when I thought I was out - the DRAG me back in..."

30,000 pieces. OMG. That's not a hobby - more a way of life.
Here's a guesstimate of my crimes (so far): 15mm ancients: 400 figs, 80% done. 1/72 Napoleonics: 800 figs, 50% done 1/72 WW2: 220 figs, 70% done (but not based, varnished, etc).
So, all in about 1,500 figures, about 60% done, though I'm planning to buy at least 200 more Napoleonics figs.
I don't count AFVs in the WW2 category (except artillery crews), as these are mostly awaiting purchase of an airbrush. Nor Airfix 1/32 and things like Airfix 1/72 ancient Romans, projects abandoned 30 years ago, for which I still have the figs.

Approx ten thousand painted, maybe 200 to be painted over the next month and another 2000 to collect, if they are ever produced. But if you count all the Airfix, Esci, Italeri and Revell figures I have collected, painted and then replaced with something newer or better sculpted, then over the years you could easily double or treble the total number that I've painted.
Incidentally, I'm a divorcee with no friends lol

From there... and I do about 100 - 200 figures at a time (1/72 scale) or 20-50 (1/32) in an assembly line technique; that knocks them out pretty fast.

Well. I have buying 1/72 figs since the 70's. Last time I counted just unopened boxes in about 2010 it was over a 1000. Been buying more since then. Probably another 500 to 1000 opened. That doesn't cover metal, other scale plastics or resin figs. I'd say 15-20% are painted. Gotta buy them while they're available to be able to paint them later. Thanks. John

Yes John, it's a real problem with packs being retired. I suppose the moulds wear out, just like we do I'm also a tad concerned by rising prices, as the boxes seem to be going up almost on a monthly basis. No intention yet of retiring my old Airfix Napoleonics. They're still quite attractive and took forever to paint. It's only where they're desperately wrong that I'm replacing them, e.g. the French Foot Artillery, guns and limbers (the crews seem ok). Now, if only I could figure out how to strengthen the Airfix cavalry horses so that their legs are stiff. Ideas on a postcard... or better still on youtube.

So, that's where I'm going wrong. I do a max of 20 in a batch. Otherwise I get bored. Just put some soft tone wash on a batch today but got bored halfway through and stopped. Went on my push bike, had a few beers. Suitably reinspired came back and finished the rest. (Then washed and primed the next batch of 16.) So, how much time do you spend on each 1/72 figure? I mean altogether, including deflashing, priming, painting, basing, varnishing.

I really couldn't tell you how much time I spend on an individual figure. I know I usually spend about two hours (at a max) painting figures while my wife and I watch TV after all the dust of the day has settled. She does her hobbies, I do mine. I try not to work so long it seems like work. The thing is I try to do one color a session. Let's say I'm doing Napoleonic French Line. One night I'll work my way through the coats (blue); the next night, if I finished that, I might do black (shakos, packs, boots, leggings, etc), then white or flesh, and on to details and touchups. Like that, depending on how ornate the uniforms are, I can knock out a hundred or two in a little over a week if I can paint a bit every night.
I admit to slowing down now; now I'm doing a hundred or so at a time. As I said, my eyes get tired.

Painted figures over all scales and all periods, several thousand. Unpainted, very few; I only buy what I want when I intend to use it

Hello, my collection is 90 % Napoleonic and 6.200 are painted. About 2000 are waiting, unpainted and still in their boxes... In summer i seldom paint figures, winter is my favourite "Painting Season"...

I have a total collection of around 18000 figures mainly Napoleonic of this around 4,000 are painted I have to admit I am mainly a winter painter myself I always seem to be too busy in summer. Another problem is getting hold of out of stock sets I have a want list of around 15 sets that are out of stock or not released yet.
