I hereby send some pics of the Velites and Hastati. The Velites were skirmishers from the poorer Roman class. They wore helmets with wolves and bear skins and were armed with javelins a shield and gladius. They harassed the enemy before the battle. The first regular line in the Republican legion were the Hastati. They could pay for their own armour and were armed with a light and a heavy pilum, a scutum, a gladius, metal breast and backplate, a helmet and shinguard on the left leg.
These look great in formation like that. Those guys with the animal heads look quite threatening when you see them all together: some of their ancient opponents must have wondered what they were up against the first time they saw them.
Yes, I liked the boxes with 48 figures because it allows you to build up an ancient army relatively fast with infantry. I always found the 12 figurs cavalry boxes a bit dissapointing, you needed to buy a lot of boxes to get a decent cavalry unit in the field 🤓
