Part I These are some pics of my Roman republican legion (Legio V). They are the 2nd and 3rd line of a consular manipel, the principes and triarii. The principes (blue) were from the upper level of Roman society and could afford chainmail, etrusco corinthian helmets and shin plates. The triarii (red) were recruited from veteran legionairs and had similar protection but instead of a pilum they were armed with a lance which enabled them to fight in phalanx formation. There used to be a motto about them which mend leaving it up to the triarii to finish the job “inde rem ad triarios redisse”. This is Part I of the pics, Part II will follow shortly.
