This question has been asked before but not for a while, how big is stash compared to your amount of painted figures. my stash is around 14,500 figures & I have painted around 5,000 not a bad ratio but I have been clearing out my unwanted figures on ebay.

At last count, something over 20 000 painted & based figures and about 3 unpainted figures.
Really, a few more than that. I have about 20 yet to be painted HaT UM Zulus, about half a box of HaT Austrian Grenzers left to be converted into Swedish infantry, various tanks and SPGs for WW2 and a few ECW figures left to do.
I generally don't like to have a huge pile of unpainteds hanging around. I'm looking at the HaT' Russian Nap infantry that's coming & some ACW figures for future purchases.

I got behind due to health and family reasons - but I have about 25,000 painted figures (over that last 30+ years) and probably 10,000 or more waiting - there is a closet full of untouched boxes and several boxes (cases, really) filled with unpainted armies. It's my fault for buying bulk and abandoning this or that project for a new one and buying stuff when it comes out of concern for availability when I'm ready to paint them. I am seriously contemplating selling off some of my figures that I know I'll never get around to painting as I've abandoned projects and eras; the problem is selling them. I sold some stuff on Ebay many moons ago, but now it seems so complicated and with the numerous fees involved I really don't know that it's worth it.
Now that's 1/72. I've painted about 1,000 or so 1/32 figures for my long never-ending Alamo project but my total 1/32 scale collection numbers fifteen thousand at last inventory, not counting horses and accessories. I don't know that I'll ever make a serious attempt at painting my 1/32 scale collection.

I've given painted armies to friends & will give away more for the sake of "finding a good home"..... I agree with you that the intrinsic worth of even beautifully painted figures is mostly emotional not in cash.
Enjoy your figures but don't plan to retire on the proceeds of selling them.

Wow! Those numbers are truly impressive gentlemen! A lifetime’s effort and devotion to the hobby. I can only image how it feels to enjoy such armies you have created!
If ever you are looking to unload any of your unpainted 1/32 Napoleonics please reach out to me as we may be able to help each other.
Cheers

Donald; You are so right about the true worth of my little guys. I never figured on making a profit off my figures - otherwise I would never have opened the first playset or taken the first figure off the sprue, much less painted them. I considered selling some of them (even at a bit of a loss) so I might clear some space and get a few bucks to buy some of the newer sets I'm more interested in now. But it's all so complex now and it seems that Ebay, between sellers fees and PayPal's pound of flesh you get gouged to the point it's not worth the effort. I don't expect to get rich or retire, and I had no problem paying a reasonable fee to Ebay back in the day - but when I was investigating selling recently it seemed someone was taking a "taste" at every step. That's ridiculous IMO. I guess I'll hang on to my extras until I find a viable option.

You couldn't really sell the "Collection" as a job lot & would need to break it down, ideally, to 20-40 figure lots. So you also hit the truth with your earlier comment about packing & posting. The difficulty of doing that for several hundred packets of figures would be a nightmare.
We both enjoy what we've got and that is the only consideration. When I've "shuffled off this mortal coil" , I've said to my wife to simply give everything to my pals & throw away what they don't want. I guess I won't be caring too much by then.

about 7,000 over the last 50 years or so. I keep buying figs but selling them off (5mm to 25mm)for family needs. Currently I have about 3,000 figs and at least 3,000 unpainted. My wife is very forgiving! Sadly I don't expect to live to 100 in good condition to finish them all....

To be honest selling on ebay is quite easy & the changes in fees paid is down to ebay charging fees on postage as well as the item. You also pay charges on paypal if the buyer uses it.

I agree that it is much simpler - particularly with PayPal. Back in the day with Money Orders it could be quite a hassle. And I understand the fees and charges after all, they provide a service they should receive something for their efforts. Back when I first started and sold some extra boxes off there was a basic fee based on a percentage of the sale price and you got at least one free re-listing if the product didn't sell. I could understand that. Now, if I understand correctly you are charged at both ends of the deal as well as paying for a re-listing if it doesn't sell the first time. I could be wrong, but that's how it looked at me. Another thing I don't understand is why should ebay charge anyone a fee for postage if it's nothing out of their pocket. In my mind that's gouging. And then charges on Paypal added to that? Again, I can understand that, but it becomes usurious to both buyer and seller IMO.

paintdogDid you mean Austrian Grenzers, or Landwehr? Because if you use Landwehr you dont need to convert them. I've gotten a good few Landwehr boxes and used them for my Swedish army. Havent had a need to convert them.

Havent had a need to convert them. Steve: apologies, it is the Landwehr set. By the time I'm finished, the Swedes will have 9 batts of infantry (2 Guard, 1 Light, 3 Line & 3 militia), 2 large & 1 small cavalry regiments and a battery of artillery. All HaT. The staff are paint or full conversions of mostly HaT' figures.
This will make them viable in a small game, or, with Russian allies, a larger game.

Darn it. TooFatLardies are producing an Ancient version of their Sharp Practice rule set. Always loved Ancients. Suddenly a whole swathe of half-finished Airfix Ancient Britons that I’d more or less written off are screaming for a major refurbishment. I have some of the Airfix Romans already, painted eons ago, but the figures are so poor don’t think I’ll bother redoing them. Will have to look for some new ranges. So, that’s 0/100 (say) for starters, with perhaps 80 figures still to buy.
Still have quite a way to go on my Napoleonics project, and my WW2 armies, which in terms of figures I’d estimate are respectively 400/800 painted and 100/140 painted, excluding vehicles and terrain.
