Death of the gallant Durnford. Colonel Durnford died at Islandlwana - exactly how, we'll never know. Given that all of those who escaped were on horse back, Durnford must have had a chance but possibly chose to die with honour.
HaT Zulus about to finish off a Newline Durnford.

Dear Donald,
That's a marvellous little diorama/vignette of wargaming figures! How beaut to put them to both uses. Was it in a game, or purely a 'photo opportunity'?
Particularly well done with the skin tones of the Zulus. Your undercoating, shading (and highlighting?) has worked a treat.
The veldt on the bases looks tops too.
Regards, James

Just some random figures, grouped to show the newly painted Durnford.
The veldt....funny you should say.
How green was the grass during the Zulu War?
A lot of people go for the dried yellow look.
I think, because the heavy rains were not long finished, that it was quite green. Not Irish green, but as green as OZ after the Spring rains.
I wait, like a soldier in the 24th Foot, to be massacred by someone with conflicting & no doubt telling views on the colour of the grass.

The Durnford figure has painted up very nicely and the Zulus are just fabulous, as James says, the skin tones are very effective.
Regarding the grass, I saw the South African "Blue Train" on SBS a couple of weeks ago. As it travelled through Kwa Zulu Natal the landscape was very green; and by green I mean almost emerald.
