Are there any good stores in NY especially near Queens that sell our beloved 1/72 soldiers? Or is this a primarily European hobby? Any brands like HaT cheaper over there? I looked at some shops online in Queens but seemed to focus mostly on airplanes and RC.

I was in NY on holiday in August last year and visited some hobby shops while there. I went to three shops: Rudy's Hobby in Queens, Jan's Hobby Shop and Red Caboose on Manhattan. All three have a collection of plastic models such as airplanes, vehicles and some figures. They all have the classic old time hobby shop feel to them and are worth a visit, but I wouldn't say they have an extensive collection. Don't expect to find five boxes of HaT 7YW Prussians if you know what I mean (unless lucky!). In terms of 1/72 figures, I would say the Red Caboose had the widest selection, incl some HaT. They were a bit hard find though, some figures were in one shelf, others in another (look around the whole maze of shelfs . They also have a lot of other stuff, mostly model train related but not just, and it is really cramped and when I visited them in August, hot as a sauna! Don't remember the prices but fairly high I believe, we are after all talking about Manhattan... The other two shops had just a few 1/72 figures, but I found Red Box Gangsters at Jan's, which was a great find to me.

I work in NYC and have visited all three of these shops on many occasions. Jesse's advice is pretty spot-on. A normal-sized box of 1/72 figs will run between $9-15. Red Caboose has the biggest selection by far and is tucked away in a basement in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Well worth the visit. Rudy's is also worth the trip out to Queens but he's only open later in the week, so check his hours on line. Mostly Italeri and Revell last time I was out there, not much in the way of HaT. Tanks and AFVs galore though. Jan's is up in the 90's on the East Side. Last time I was there (October-ish) the 1/72 figs selection had dropped off substantially. They used to stock all manufacturers, so maybe I just hit them at a bad time. Paints and models in abundance too. Bring cash to Jan's, or face the wrath of the old lady at the register. If you're like me, then the hunt is half the fun in this hobby and you'll visit all three.

On the other hand, I pretty much know what I want, and most can be bought online so we'll see.
