Does any know if the colors of the cloth tops and crosses on the fur caps varied according to host/regiment or were they all red with a white cross?

I was hoping someone with more intimate knowledge of the subject would answer; but you question got my curiosity aroused. I did a Google search and finally dug out my dog-eared copy of Funcken. The only illustrations I could find of Cossacks, be they Don or Ural or Guard shows them with red covers (or whatever the name of it was - I think I used to know what they were called). I hope this helps.

I've been researching the Cossacks lately and have found very little variety in uniforms so yes they were all standard if they wore the ushanka. As for the "free" cossacks they wore whatever they brought with them from home in addition to supplying their own arms which could be little more than a bow and lance.
