Photos from our recent game where the Covenanters handily defeated Montrose (with English Royalist cavalry)
What a game!
Unlike my previous forays against English Royalist armies, this one saw my Covenanters fight – & win – a breathtakingly close & exciting tussle against the forces of Montrose.
My pal provided nearly 500 points of Scottish Royalists. I topped it up to 700 with an Allied general & 3 BGs of Cavaliers. We decided upon a simple "army break" game & we divided ourselves into two teams. The game was a tad over three hours and ended with an emphatic result.
From the start, all along the line, the Covenanters were subject to determined assaults by units of Highlander Clansmen, Irish & Highland P&S & Highland lancers & the aforementioned English Horse.
And from the start, everything went well for the Lowlanders. For once, their two units of artillery (light & medium) were effective. Campbell of Lawlers' gallant P&S unit held, then broke the cream of the Highland infantry, whilst on one flank, the Covenanter lancers survived long enough to blunt an enemy cavalry thrust whilst on the other flank, a more numerous Covenanter cavalry force managed to out manoeuvre their English foes!! Indeed, my light cavalry Moss Troopers were able to break through the enemy line, turn & hit the King;'s Lifeguard in the rear!

My plan of boosting morale in key units by placing Commanders in the front rank, whilst dangerous, meant we were the equal & sometimes superior to our opponents.
