Hello Hat,
Any ideas/projects for the near future concerning the Second Italian War of Independance? I was thinking about French Infantry (chasseurs, guards, Zouaves), French artillery and cavalry, Austrian Line infantry, Grenzers, cavalry Hussars, artillery, Sardinians (Line infantry/Bersaglieri).... Besides Waterloo brand not yet touched by another brand If I remember correctly...
Greetings,
Nick, Belgium

Bersaglieri and mounted Carbiniers from Waterloo 1815 were very good, but Austrian line Infantry and artillery not very much, the sculpting was not so fine... Also another italian producer, Lucky Toys did some years ago: Sardinian Infantry and Garibaldini, you can see them on plasticsoldierreview.

This war seems to be a very specialist war and not known by many people

Excellent suggestion. That war had a huge impact on several countries politically, strategically and culturally.
A good set of Austrians is also needed to fight the Prussians in 1866.

That's true, let's think only about history of Austria-Hungary, France, Prussia. The third italian war of Independence was fought at the same time of austrian-prussian war (we were "allied" with Prussians, and the austro-hungarian empire had to fight on a double front). Some years after in 1870 italian army (Kingdom of Italy was proclamed in 1861), advantaged of French defeat by the prussians, to occupy Rome and to end the State of the Pope (Stato della Chiesa). Nevertheless is right who say that it is a very "local" and not well known conflict.

Thank's for the reply guys. The battle of Solferino for example lay at the base of the founding of the Red Cross by Henri Dunant. I was after the Napoleonic Battle of Leipzig in 1813 the biggest battle in Western Europe (250 000 participants). Two emperors and one king were all present. New weapons like the Chassepot rifle, the rifled artillery guns, trooptransport by railway, observation balloons, telegraph....were all new to the battlefield. For a dioramamaker there's a wealth on coloured uniforms: the plumed bersaglieri, Garibaldi's red shirts, cavalry lancers, the colourful zouaves, French cuirassiers, Austrians in blue and white....The Italian buildings from Italeri can be nicely used. HaT made some fine French and Sardinians but no Austrians unfortunately (indeed , the set from Waterloo wasn't all that good....) Hopefully we'llsee some more of this conflict in diorama_

Bersaglieri is really nice touch, to be honest. Personally, I own both Waterloo 1815 Bersaglieri, mounted Carabiniers, the Austrian infantry. And I also own lucky toys Piedmont infantry and redshirts sets. But personally, I believe it does not mean HAT cannot have their own sets for Italian independence. There are many interesting units in the Italian independence war, for example, the Bersaglieri, Carabiniers, red shirts, and alpine hunters, and it does not count normal infantries, line cavalry, and artilleries. And I am only talking about the Italian side, it can be expanded into Austrian, but also French in 1859 and Prussian in 1866, where Italians both participate.
I know the new WWI Italians are on the way, but to be honest... I really hope there can be an independent box of WWI Bersaglieri instead of being in the Arditi... I love Bersaglieri units so much, I love their hats. I would like to see Bersaglieri in Italian independence, WWI, WWII, and even modern time. (I mean a whole set is about Bersaglieri, not a part of the box is Bersaglieri)
Something else, I also hope for some new WWI Belgian soldiers, I wish more for the top hat soldiers in the heavy weapon sets.

Oh, and I forgot, you also have two Sicily and pope's army during the Italian Independence.
Here is another question, anyone interested in the Boshin War in Japan during 1868-1869?
I feel it can be a really interesting topic too. Basically, nobody is making Boshin War figures, but there are tons of cool units.
