Some folks have recommended priming figures with gesso. Gesso is an underlayment often used in art painting, and is both sticky and flexible, so perhaps suitable for priming plastics.
Anyway, I've recently seen colored gesso. There's already been white and black. Now some companies, Matisse in particular, are selling gesso in a wide variety of colors, intended to serve as a base color for your painting. Think of blue if you're painting a scene at sea, or red if you're illustrating Dante. On the Blick website, I counted 37 different shades. Something for every army.

Interesting stuff there. I see theres a chalky version too which so say gives a smoother finish to make the painting easier.
Do you know what its like when it comes to the little details sculpted into figures? I mean is it a thick base which will end up hiding details? If it sticks properly to plastic & metal, also allowing the paint on top to adhere better, I might give it a try if not too thick a liquid.
