Naturally, perhaps, given their role and evolution, figure manufacturers have tended to concentrate on dynamic poses for light infantry of the Napoleonic era.
However, much of the time, they were used just as ordinary infantry, deployed in column or line formation as the case may be, within brigades and divisions, just like their line infantry neighbours.
The only manufacturer that I think has reflected this is HaT with the admirable Line Chasseurs marching and command sets, supplemented by elite sets with reasonable numbers of marching figures.
Aside from a dedicated Bardin-uniformed command set (sorry, HaT, but despite relabelling this as the French Command set, the difference in uniform is too great for them to be of use for 1813-1815 line infantry), one of the few remaining significant omissions for the later Napoleonic period is a usable French Light Infantry set.
Yes, there is, or was, a HaT Bardin uniform light infantry set, and it wasn't bad. But consider, is the requirement for marching and command French Light Infantry any less than it is for Line?
From memory, so don't quote me, Light Infantry battalions present at Waterloo represented significantly more than 25%, getting on for a third, of the line battalions present.
So far as I am aware, they deployed just as the Line battalions did. Assaulted in column, just as the Line infantry did.
So, an updated set with plenty of marching and command would be a real boost.
Say "yes!" to pointy cuffs!

Good evening, Well unless I am mistaking the 1812-1815 line infantry sets are already compliant since the only difference between line and lights regiments was the color of the uniforms. Centre compagnies did not wear sabre bricquets and epaulettes anymore. So you can easily produce an 1815 light infantry units using Hat french fusiliers+ Hat elites + the Future Hat 1812 marching set. You can add the équivalent in greatcoats too from the young guard + the Hat future elite set + the Hat 1805 un greatcoats with some shako conversions. Where I fully support is regarding the command set lost some years ago. Have a nice evening. CPN

Dear Eduardian. As I'm particularly interested in the 1813/14 campaigns, I've realised that in such periods, the Bardin uniform was worn along with various pre 1812 versions. Napoleon needed desperately to quickly have a new army to oppose to the new approaching coalition, equipped with whatever uniforms availabe in the deposits. At the Leipzig Museum various example of pre 1812 uniforms, found after the battle, are shown. When wargaming battles of these periods, to reflect such an eterogeneous situation, I use battalions wearing both uniforms. In any case your suggestion would add a precious element to the long list of French infantry sets, nowaday available.
Best greetings. Giovanni.

Edwardian, apart from uniform colours, the only difference between light and line infantry was the cuffs - surely fixable with a scalpel. I think a far higher priority would be to resurrect the lost 1815 French line infantry command set. It may be that HaT's 1815 infantry are compatible with re-based Zvezda 1815 Command figures, however we will have to wait and see. In any case, if viable this will be a very expensive option..

I agree on all counts:
- Yes, the only difference is the cuffs, so these could have the buttons trimmed off and a 'V' painted on, but not something I would tackle if the very soft plastic is used for the new marching figures.
- Yes, I agree that a dedicated 1813-1815 is a higher priority than MAC 1813-1815 Light Infantry
- Yes, the Zvezda command set is the only option now and for the foreseeable future, but would be ruinously expensive (IIRC, something like 89 line/light battalions present at Waterloo!) and less satisfactory than HaT figures in the same style as their marching set.
But, it would still be a very important and welcome set to produce!

Yes, there was lots of French Light Infantry regiments at Waterloo. The proportion in Reille's Corps at Quatre Bras was particularly high: 13 battalions out of 36 total. I have painted them all from the existing HaT range by painting pointed cuffs on the French line infantry. The battalions also have greatcoated infantry among them from the Young Guard set. Conversely, I used the French Light Infantry set to provide grenadiers and voltigeurs by painting cuff flaps over round cuffs on them. The resolution might not be good enough to tell the difference in these photos, but the painting was quite straightforward. What I am missing is Eagles - so, yes, 1815 French command please. Another need for me is a set of generic Mounted French Staff Officers to lead the higher formations, brigade and above (and British/Hanoverian and Prussian and Netherlands...). Happy New Year to all, Kay

The King's German Legion and Hanoverian light battalions, mainly armed with muskets, would make a great set, but I do not see this as a likely release. There are enough French light battalions in proportion to line to justify a release, but, yes, I agree with you and the others who repeat that the most important missing set is French 1813-15 Infantry command.

Pointy cuffs? In fact I am struggling to see any differences from the line infantry (apart from colour) - This is a contemporary image from a series illustrating the Bardin regulations.

This may seem like sacrilege - apologies; while I'm always a fan of new issues and more poses - at 1/72 scale I've never had an issue with paint modifications or even a bit of X-Acto magic to take off an unwanted button to convert Line to Light. I even managed to take off the epaulets (to my satisfaction) on your pre-1805 Elites to create Line Fusiliers to match your superb elite poses. So I don't think we NEED a new issue for post-1812 Elites/Lights.
Now, do we WANT a new dedicated set?
THAT is another matter completely. Assuredly the answer for me is in the positive.
