The era for which I most use HäT figures is World War 1, specifically, the Middle Eastern-Mesopotamian (and soon, I hope, East African) theaters. HäT has been a boon for this period, as for years no one else made much at all for it, and certainly not for the theaters on which I focus (unless you count the old Airfix Bedouin, who of course feature prominently when I need Arabs for my scenarios). In all fairness, another company is now making WW1 Middle eastern sets, but HäT was there first!
I modified some pre-WW1 HäT figures as well, such as 8203 Colonial War Indians and 8289 Colonial Bengal Lancers, for Mesopotamia. And the HäT/Airfix Gurkhas serve well for WW1 once their Bren pouches are cut off and replaced with bandoliers from the cavalry that were made to be slung around the horses' necks.
The rules I use are Command Decision 4 - Test of Battle (which started out as a WW2 rules set but has modifications for WW1 and other periods). In CD, one stand of figures equals a platoon-size unit. Following the lead of Great War Spearhead, I often "bathtub" units for larger battles, so that stands represent closer to a company-sized unit and a battalion consists of six or so stands.

I also play a lot of WW2 with Command Decision, focusing on North Africa and other parts of the Mediterranean. Of course, the HäT figures most useful to me for that period are 8227 WW2 British Mortars and 8228 WW2 British Machine Guns. Currently I am planning to run a game at HMGS Cold Wars 2018 featuring a Greece 1941 army most of which consists of figures adapted from 8118 WWII Romanian Infantry because of the Dutch helmets. A few of the figures are in Adrian helmets, and others are in Italian helmets.
