I've been painting a batch of Young Guard (in greatcoats) figures today, as 1813 French conscript infantry ie: with neutral grey/beige greatcoats, not (Guard) blue, and have been rejoicing in the simplicity of this painting project; it has also set me thinking....
In actuality a lot of Napoleonic line/regular/reserve/conscript infantry operated for a lot of the time in greatcoats. 'Full dress' would be reserved for elite units and for those occasions when it was simply too hot to traverse the battlefield in a woollen overcoat. It's reasonable to believe then that most actions fought in anything other than high summer would have seen masses of greatcoated infantry.
Whereas the French sets of greatcoated infantry that HaT have produced to date are wearing trousers, other nations eg: Austria, Prussia, Russia, would have infantry in gaiters but still wearing a greatcoat over the top.
My proposal then is for a set of 60+ figures which is capable (through head swaps) of being used for various nations, figures being in greatcoats and with gaiters, not trousers. Set configuration would be something like this:
20 marching figures (2 x poses)
20 advancing figures (2 or 3 x poses)
12 x firing/loading poses (2 x poses)
8 x 'command' poses (1 x officer and 1 x drummer, 4 of each)
Heads: 20 x Russian 'kiwer'; 20 x Prussian shako with cover; 20 x Austrian shako (with oak lead field sign); 20 x French shako with cover ie: more headgear than figures, a great advantage if converting other figures. Figures could be configured a bit like the SYW Prussians, with head in place but headgear capable of being varied.
There is a great lack of 'real' Napoleonic infantry I think, and such a set could fill a huge gap.
