I've been working on adding a couple of husars to my Prussian & Austrian SYW armies. One difficulty I've had was the size of the busby. Illustrations show a range of sizes. I've used the Italeri figures & Revell SYW hussar horses. Here, I've used a bearskin from the HaT Napoleonic Horse Grenadiers, with the bag made of paper & a pig-tail from a plastic rod. This figure will end up being a Kalnoky hussar: Here, you can see two already finished in the smaller busbys - a Prussian Wartenburg hussar and an Austrian Baranjay hussar. donald

Beautiful conversions Donald! Such conversions, while fiddly, are a real part of the joy, I reckon. Converted figures always are that bit more special, due to the effort put in. Great stuff James

Great work donald, this conversion looks entirely convincing as a Kalnoky hussar. The setting in the wooded glade is a mini-diorama in its own right. Just hope that von Schony's Freikorps are not lying in ambush!
SYW hussars are some considerable way down the conversion/painting pipeline for me, with loads of WoSS stuff in progress right now. However, if I may I'd like to borrow your idea of using figures from the Italeri General Staff set and doing the same conversion? I'd quite forgotten about these and the five mounted hussar figures in the set are good poses, and not the usual charging and slashing hussar poses either. I have a couple of the Imperial staff sets, so enough hussars there to make a (small) Hungarian unit. The same set of course includes two hussar officers on foot with map, pointing to the skies...but at what, I'm not sure....!
Your work on hussars will also lead me back to looking more closely at the headgear of various SYW units; I had (lazily) assumed all Hungarian hussars wore much the same headgear, but perhaps not the case?

Thank you, sir. Yes, not everyone wore a tricorne (just nearly everyone!). There were Casquets, as worn by these figures: www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1208could be useful - Austrian sappers & there's a few French SYW units who wore these as well. Unfortunately, I don't have that set so that rather slows me down.
And on the subject of SYW Hungarians......sets by HaT of hussars & Hungarian infantry would be welcome.
But FIRST, some SYW cuirassiers, please!
