I have just finished Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and came to the conclusion that the film Apocalypse Now is based on this book. With the action moved from the 19th century Belgium Congo to the Vietnam War. Even the rogue character played by Marlon Brando is named as Kurts in both stories. An easy scenario to war game with a small Paddle Steamer going into an unknown territory, and all the figures are available, right down to the crocodiles. It just goes to show that some of the old classics can still give inspiration.
Best regards,
Malcolm

Malcolm, the link between the novel & the movie is probably not the best kept secret. Indeed, school kids have been taught about this for at least 30 years.
There's even a Sparks Notes on the connection:

Actually, there are a lot of such film updates. Did you know the movie "Clueless" is a modern take on Austen's 'Emma" and "The Lion King" is Shakespeare's "Hamlet"? You'll be less surprised to discover Baz Luhrmann’s "Romeo + Juliet" is based on "Romeo and Juliet".

Well just above my post is the crocodile that I was thinking of. The other films based on Shakespeare I already knew, you forgot West Side Story. But I haven't read many classic 19th century books so I was surprised by this one, getting about 2/3 through before I realised. I enjoy Hardy, but there is not much of a military aspect in his writing. Then with your Nice Steamer in mind I thought that this was an easy scenario to depict.
Best regards,
Malcolm

You don't see that set in the shops these days, is it still part of HaT's current range?

Funny looking beast. A genuine "saltie" would be slimmer & the head is shaped incorrectly. Our local saltwater crocs may be substantially different to Nile crocodiles. However, these flaws pale compared to the quadruped to its right (whatever it is supposed to be) & the weird elephant.

The strange beast looks like a Zedonk this came from the original Airfix Zoo set 2... Mostly designed around Ron Elys TV Tarzan series very popular in the UK at the time... Ron Ely used to do a lot of his own stunts not sure if he ever wrestled an Alligator though.... Its possible that Nicolai or Preiser have/had Crocs... Still puts a smile on my face
