Washes

As everyone else on here and the other manufacturers forum has said, it is all down to personal taste and trial and error. I use Army Painter quick shades-the dark and soft tone. And I use vallejo flesh wash for...flesh. Sometimes less is more with this! I'm still trying to get better with my use of washes, but a wash used well certainly improves any painting in my opinion. Might be worth having a look on Bennos forum as you might get some more knowledgable answers.
I've just started to follow a new routine which so far has improved my painting, although I would not say my painting is anywhere near the standards others achieve.
Wash figures, primer (vallejo), dark wash over everything (helps keep the details clear for me and helps to point out the depths/creases for when I start painting base layers, base layer of main items (jackets/trousers), dark wash, highlights with a slightly lighter shade. Then start to paint all other parts. Dark wash or soft wash all other parts (muskets, hair, cuffs, shoes etc), highlight with lighter shade if it seems worthwhile or possible dry brush (the dry brushing depends on how motivated I am). Two coats of matt VARNISH (vallejo currently).
But everyone has their own ways of using washes/highlights etc and achieves much more impressive results than mine.

Hi Hat, now you have released the 1/72 Napoleonic's and ACW sets, what's currently on the production line/design stage etc? Are you able to clarify what is and isn't being worked on? I'm not asking for time scales, just an idea of what will be next etc. Thanks in advance.

Zulu's and Unmarried Zulu's, British Inf, general service wagon are all unavailable at the 'big' UK webstores and have been for some time now. Also, Natal Native Contingent would be good.

This week I've managed to get Hat's WW1 Anzacs, AZW British inf, Zulus and general service wagon (which I am pleased about as most of the AZW range is now out of stock everywhere again.

That looks like a very nice collection. I'd agree with Donald, that is a very neat and organised set up you have there!

Any more masters/designs to show us design team?!

As great as it would be, I think this is wishful thinking. IF Hat were to continue their SYW range, you'd assume they'd try and complete the armies already started-Prussians and Austrians.

These look excellent!

These look very good. Is there a British artillery set planned? If there is, then the four poses here are enough as they can mix and match with the British to make full size gun crews. However, if there are only plans for one AWI artillery set, I'd suggest adding a couple more poses as I don't think four is enough. But don't let that take away from the fact that those designs look very good.

I think the dragoon set looks good. I like the idea of a horse handler but equally accept that you won't be adding poses to the set.
I think the command set lacks a little bit of ambition. The designs already produced look good and all poses are suitable etc. However, when comparing this set to other command sets there is a difference: AWI Continental command - 5 poses
Imperial Roman command-7 poses Nap French chaussers - 7 poses Nap Prussian command - 9 poses SYW Prussian Command - 6 poses Nap French Command - 6 poses AZW British command - 10 poses Nap Spanish command - 10 poses Nap British command - 6 poses SYW Austrian Command - 6 poses
Would be nice to see a couple more NCO's. However, if you're not going to add poses then that's fair enough! This range should be a success either way!

Also, those JPGs you posted with sketches/designs-any chance you could re-post them so they can be opened up rather than having to try and zoom in on the screen?! Thanks!

I agree that separate regular/militia sets are a better concept than MAC for this period. I think there is the question of how many figures you would be looking to have in a box-32/48/60? How many poses per box? Realistically, will it be 6 militia poses, 6 Continental poses or would this be expanded? If it's a 12 figure sprue would you consider making more poses for the sprue-for instance 8 poses with 4 of those doubled up on the sprue to make 12 figures? Or is it set to 6 poses? in which case you might as well just have 2 of each pose to make the 12 figures? But Minuteman's suggestions are all very good if you are sticking to 6 poses. A kneeling pose for the militia would be good.
I'm sure you're already aware, but many people on other forums regularly make the point that they won't buy into a new era unless they know there will be guaranteed opponents. So how ever long into the future the plans are to release these, it would be silly to not have some British released at the same time. Of course I would love to see all sorts of extra sets being made for this era, and I know the other AWI thread has some great suggestions for other sets (French/Hessians/Tarleton's/artilllery etc), but these first sets have got to get people really interested and convinced the era is worth collecting. That hopefully brings commercial success and leads to what we all want-more AWI sets!
Thank you Hat and I look forward to following your progress!

Excellent stuff. Is there any plan as to what you would look to design first out of those sets? Also, not sure if it is just me, but those small thumbnails/JPGs don't open.

Simple question and simple answer: The AWI range needs to be developed. Cheers CPN Agree with CPN, this would be a great opportunity. However, I'm realistic enough to know this will be at the very bottom of the list...

The comments on this forum are by just a very small minority of your customers. You will not please everyone, as demonstrated by the conflicting views on this thread, so all opinions (including my own) should be taken with a pinch of salt. So hopefully you will not get 'bogged down' in the debates that go round and round. I assume you will know from sales and supplier/industry feedback which sets have been successful and what has made them popular, so hopefully you already have a good idea as to the formula to repeat. Ultimately you've got to make what you consider to be possible, both practically and financially. I don't collect your 1/32 range, but I am pleased to see you actively adding to the range for others who do.

As with everyone else, I say just buy the extra box. The spares always get used in the end...

A certain UK retailer has just posted a list of what is presumably the next batch of Hät releases on their Futures page. The list contains 11 sets: the Nap. Austrian MAC, ACW Marching x2 and Command, the long awaited British Dragoons and three new sampler sets. Maybe Hat can confirm this and update their site accordingly especially the front page!? Anyway good news and lets hope these sets are soon hitting the shelves.
If you spotted these on Drum and Flag future page these sets have been on there for months...Unless you spotted them at a different retailer? I hope these releases are imminent, but don't get your hopes up. The best way to look at this is by thinking they'll be released in 2021, then if they do end up getting released this year it will be a nice suprise!

Look forward to seeing these once painted. I think I was a little too critical of the Hat Austrians, once painted up they are quite nice. Especially the Grenadier officer.

Nice shared photos. I particularly like the look (or what can be seen of them) of the French infantry. Sounds like everyone has been doing some very creative conversions. I would be very happy to see more SYW-and it was a global conflict so has the potential for a diverse range of uniforms etc. In particular it would be a dream come true to see the French and Indian War well represented. I just wonder if the hit and miss range of SYW sets out there already and the prospect of very slow output of new sets would put potential new collectors to this era off? If you already collect SYW then obviously you're a guaranteed customer to new additions to the range.
HaT (referred to as the other lot etc?) may well have had the success with their WSS range because they've been able to prove they would be releasing a huge range in a relatively short period of time. If the SYW were to be given that backing then I'm sure future sets would be a greater success and bring in new collectors to the era. Just my thoughts.
I'm looking forward to the AWI range if it materialises and hopefully it would be a commercial success with the backing of US customers in particular. If Hat can prove they have multiple sets in the pipeline and there won't be long long waits for each set, then again maybe that will bring new collectors to the era.

I would love more SYW sets-especially British and French. However, considering the apparent reluctance for these to be made, perhaps it is not a popular/commercially lucrative period? I have the three Prussian sets and the Austrian sampler set (I really like the idea of the sampler set) and in my opinion they are not examples of Hat's best work. The command poses are all well done (minus the poor fit of the drum), but the 'action' poses lack imagination and energy. The Austrian figures are ok-but only after I began priming and painting did I notice consistent lack of details lost in the mould. These are my opinions only however, and I would absolutely respect other people's views on the merits of these sets. Revell also made a bit of a mess of this era-their Prussian Infantry are way below their usual high standards and the Austrians are a mixed bunch. I believe the the only really accomplished set of SYW out there is the Austrian Artillery which is a great set.

I bought a new box of the Airfix First World War French last summer. I could not believe how poor the quality was. I've never encountered a set with so much flash and the plastic seems so soft yet all guns etc very brittle. That is a set that will stay in its box for ever...

No objections. Original masters all look great. Would be happy to see any of them come out in some form. I think they'd be best to start simple and I don't think MAC is required (regardless of how well the concept works with the naps sets). Although if they did release MAC format, I'd be pleased with that as well. Basically, I'd just like to see these come into fruition in any form...! I do enjoy reading other people's thoughts on how this period could be represented though.
I'd like to see grenadiers and regular continentals released first and think that would be a good start as grenadier companies were often moved from their regiments to form elite units with the light companies and they seem to have endured significantly more campaigns then the regular infantry. And the grenadiers with bearskins do look fantastic. Regular continentals would be great as Italeri's efforts were so bad...Accurate/Revell did a great job portraying British regulars and American militia so these can be left until after grenadiers and continentals. Just my opinion anyway!
